Remember the first time you logged into MySpace? You had that friendly but perhaps creepy guy named Tom as your friend already. Your first social networking friend Tom was always there to make you feel a little less lonely, even though some people weren’t so much a fan.
However, Tom is no longer going to be new users’ first friend. When you make a new MySpace, your first friend is now a page called MySpace Today. On top of that, Tom’s last update was around Christmas, and he hasn’t even logged in since January. In April 2009, Tom became the only founding member of MySpace to still be on board; perhaps he’s going to migrate elsewhere as well.
Personally, I haven’t touched MySpace in who knows how long. I made one in high school (2003 or 2004), and jumped on the chance to make a Facebook once I got my .edu address. Once that happened, I only used my MySpace for people who weren’t in college, but once Facebook opened up to everyone, I stopped updating MySpace. I was never really a MySpace fan in the first place: I thought it was too loud, too flashy, and I hate going to a page and having someone’s horrible taste in music blasted at me. The site never held any value for me to use it extensively.
I’m not really quite sure what the current demographics for MySpace are. “Gen Y” people have moved on to Facebook, my mother’s generation is on Facebook, and the high school kids are on Facebook, so I don’t really know who’s left. MySpace is a great platform for bands to promote themselves due to the ease of making a decent looking page with music samples and information without technical knowhow or a lot of money, but I don’t know any individuals personally who use the site as their social networking drug of choice. I personally feel that MySpace’s days are numbered, though I am surprised they’ve held on this long.
Do you still have and use your MySpace? Do you know someone who actually uses it as their main social network?
