Rabbits!

I’m back from New Jersey! My week consisted of job hunting, job interviews, seeing friends, wine tasting, food tourism, and generally having a great time. I’ll write more in depth about some things next week.

For now, I’ll share some recent additions to my Google Reader:

  • Ask A Manager: Job searching? Have general work questions? This blog is for you.
  • Life Without Pants: A great blog on “living life less restricted”. Not sure where to start? Try reading Breaking Away from Generation Now.
  • Monoxious: A fashion blog by two girls with a great sense of style and lots of DIY tutorials. I’m planning on making these sometime soon, they’re just too adorable.

See you next week!

Last post, I was reeling over breaking up with my boyfriend of years and years. A month later, I finally have some closure. I spent the week in New Jersey, hanging around with friends, becoming stress free, and just feeling darn good. It was really a great vacation from being home.

New Brunswick, NJ

One reason for going down was to see if I could “improve” the situation with my ex boyfriend in some way. When my boyfriend and I first broke up, I felt we were going to get back together. We had some things to fix, but gosh darnit, we were going to make stuff work, or so I thought. I realized the other day that no, it’s okay that we won’t get back together. I think I’ve finally accepted it, for real this time. A few months ago, I remember thinking to myself, “man, I need a real best friend.” My ex has become the best friend I could ask for, and leaving it at that is just fine. A month ago I was telling myself that I was ready to move on, but I think now I really am.

In the last post I also mentioned wanting to try and find new friends. Coming down to New Jersey made me realize this isn’t the case. I already have great friends! Yes, they may be scattered, particularly throughout New Jersey, Connecticut, and South Carolina, but they are awesome and I don’t spend enough time with them. I hung out with a great group of people while I was in New Jersey and I wish I could do it every week. (Though if I did, I would be extremely poor due to all the wonderful food to eat in New Brunswick, grr.) It’s really too bad I didn’t take advantage of the stuff in the area while I was there all the time. I guess I’ll have to make more trips when I can afford it.

Another thing I thought about while in New Jersey was trying to find some way to stay there and find a worthwhile job there for a little while. There is a large company near the campus that has a history of employing Rutgers graduates, and there is a summer internship I would be really interested in that is 13 weeks and (I’m assuming) paid. It would be a great experience and totally affordable, as summer sublets are generally cheaper since it’s harder to find people for them. Another idea was with a technology summer camp that has a location near New Brunswick in New Jersey, or there are some locations in CT that would work as well. The work would be Sunday afternoons through Friday afternoons, so I would have completely free weekends. Neither is a sure shot, of course, but I think both would be worth my while. I need to get over my fears of moving out of the house; I’m afraid to, but I know I would really love it, if I could afford it, and both of these would allow me to get out of the house for extended amounts of time.

Attempting to figure out what you want to do in life, or even just for a summer, is so difficult, isn’t it? Either way, the week did wonders for me.

Gloomy Bear hard at work

Note: I am not affiliated with Super Interns nor have I worked with them, but my supervisor at the non-profit I work at is a fan of them and sent a newsletter of theirs to me, and I believe it could be of use to at least someone out there!

Want to be cool and glamorous and enjoy the intern from home life like me? (Hah.) Super Interns is an organization based out of Connecticut that helps non-profits develop great internship programs and for interns to fill them. Although the group is out of Connecticut, they love virtual interns as well.

I have been a virtual intern for two different places, and it was a worthwhile experience both times. You will never be the coffee getter or be making best friends with the photocopier because they have you do meaningful work on your own time. Because you don’t have to worry about being in their office for certain times, it’s much easier to do a virtual internship while having another job or a full load of classes.

Super Interns internships are for credit only, so don’t expect to get rich from this. However, you will gain valuable experience and you can put it on your resume. According to their site, you don’t need to be a student to be an intern for them, but it might be to your advantage so you can get some extra credits towards graduation.

Super Interns are currently looking for people studying or interested in the following: business and marketing, entrepreneurship, e-commerce, web development, graphic design, English and creative writing, and media studies. You can find out more about any of their internships and find out how to apply here on their website.
